Fake document checker

Check a pay stub, employment letter or bank statement for signs it's been edited. Free, your file never leaves your device, and we keep nothing from it.

Drop a PDF here to check it

A pay stub, employment letter or bank statement. Up to 15 MB.

Checked on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and we keep zero data from your document. How do we know?

No document to hand? Test it on one of our fakes:

What it checks

The signs a document has been changed

It runs the checks a careful property manager would, in a few seconds, against Canadian payroll rules. Each finding shows the evidence from the document and what to check next.

How the file was made

The software that made it, whether it was edited and saved again afterwards, and whether it was made before the pay period it covers. Edits in Canva, Photoshop or a PDF editor leave traces here.

How the text is laid out

An amount in a different font from the rest of its column, a number that sits off its column's edge, and text typed over other text: the marks a changed number tends to leave.

Whether the numbers add up

On a pay stub: CPP or QPP and EI at this year's rates, gross minus deductions equals net, and year-to-date maximums. On a bank statement: balances that follow from the transactions. On a letter: contact details that hang together.

What it can't catch

A clean result isn't a green light

The checker never says a document is genuine, because it can't know. The reliable way to confirm someone is who they say they are is an ID check with a live selfie and a credit file straight from the bureau.

  • A fake built carefully from scratch, with correct numbers and no editing traces.
  • A real document that belongs to someone else.
  • Photos and screenshots: this version checks PDFs only.
  • Income tax amounts, which it doesn't check yet.
  • Whether the employer, the bank account or the applicant exists. Only a call, a registry search or a screening can tell you that.

Privacy

Your file stays on your device. We keep nothing.

An applicant's pay stub or bank statement is some of the most personal information they'll give you. So the checker was built so it never has to leave your hands, and so we never hold any of it.

Read on your device

The checker runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded: not the file, not its name, not anything in it. There's no server for documents at all.

Zero document data kept

We never receive your document, so there's nothing for us to store, share or delete. It sits in your browser tab while you read the result, and it's gone when you check another file or close the page. Nothing from it is saved on your device either.

Try it with your wifi off

Load this page, turn off your wifi or put your phone in airplane mode, then check a document. It still works, because nothing needs to leave your device.

Hidden from analytics

Our analytics and session recording are blocked from the checker. They only count that a check ran: the type of document, how many findings it had and which checks fired. If you ask for the full report, we keep the contact details you type in, never the document.

How we handle the details you do send is in our privacy policy.

Got questions?

The document checker, answered

Is it really free?

Yes. The scan is free and needs no account. If it finds something, it shows the most serious finding straight away; for the full report, give us your email and a couple of details and we'll email you a code that opens it. If it finds nothing, the whole result is free.

Do you keep my document, or anything in it?

No. The checker runs in your browser, so your file is never uploaded: we never receive the file, its name, or anything in it, and we keep zero data from it. It's gone when you check another file or close the page. If you ask for the full report, we keep only the contact details you type in.

Does it work for Quebec?

Yes. On a Quebec pay stub it checks QPP and QPIP at Revenu Québec's published rates, and EI at the lower Quebec rate. It works for every province and territory. The tool and its results are in English for now.

Can it tell me a document is real?

No. It looks for common signs of editing and for numbers that don't add up. A careful fake can pass every check, so a clean result only means these checks found nothing. To confirm an applicant is who they say they are, use an ID check with a live selfie and a credit file straight from the bureau.

What should I do if it finds a red flag?

Don't decide on the tool's word alone. Each finding says what to check next, usually a call to the employer or bank on a number you find yourself, or asking for the original PDF from the payroll portal or online banking. Give the applicant the chance to explain, and apply the same checks to every applicant.

Is it legal to check an applicant's documents like this?

You're reading a document the applicant chose to give you, on your own device, and the checker doesn't store or share anything from it. Treat what it finds like any other screening information: apply the same checks to every applicant, and base your decision on the facts you confirm.

Why only PDFs?

Most checks read things only a PDF has: the software that made it, when it was saved, and the font and position of every number. A photo or screenshot has none of that, and it's much easier to fake. Asking for the original PDF from the payroll portal or online banking is a good habit on its own.

Found a red flag? Check the applicant, not just the paperwork.
